Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon confirmed that discussions whether to license Betfair are in advanced stages.
Mr Lennon said that it is potentially easier to monitor internet gambling better than other forms because users must register themselves.
He also said it would be surprising if the style of service was attractive to the smaller punter.
