The All Party Parliamentary Betting and Gaming Group presents its report into the effects of betting on sport recommending that bookmakers should follow the lead of betting exchanges by establishing audit trails for their customers.

The report follows a four-month inquiry by MPs and peers and suggests remedies which could be included in the Gambling Bill now going through Parliament.

The growth of betting exchanges has increased the potential for corruption because they offer the facility to bet against a result. However, the report praise the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) devised between exchanges like Betfair and some sports governing bodies and suggest all bookmakers sign agree similar agreements with sports “on which they base their business. It is clear that memoranda of understanding between betting organisations and sports governing bodies can do much to improve the integrity of sports betting, and confidence in the effectiveness of governing bodies to root out corruption and irregularity.”

Significantly, the report recommends “that bookmakers consider ways of introducing processes to identify those responsible for large or unusual bets as a means of spotting early indications of problem gambling or irregular betting patterns.”
