The AFL has become the first Australian sporting body to sign a licensing agreement with the controversial betting exchange.

Under the deal, Betfair will guarantee a commission of at least $1 million a year from next season and will give the AFL full access to betting data and customer details so as to monitor betting trends and unusual patterns of betting.

Gillon McLachlan, AFL\’s Commercial Operations General Manager, said before the agreement the league had limited control over the processes relating to betting on the AFL games and received very little revenue.

The AFL signed also a separate deal with TAB Sportsbet and while racing continues its fierce opposition to Betfair, other major Australian sports, such as rugby and cricket, are anxious to take a slice of the betting industry.
