While Racing Victoria said to have questioned 19 bookmakers and to have found no evidence that Allanson placed bets using his Jack Hindon alias with any of them except Rod Cleary, The Age reports that some bookmakers have a dossier of Allanson’s betting activities going back several years but they are worried they could face charges on a retrospective basis.
“It’s all very well taking evidence from employees but if you want to get to the heart of the matter, you’ve got to speak to those people that were on the front line,” one bookmaker who refused to be named told the Australian newspaper. “But what’s in it for me if I face retribution for telling the truth. We have come up in a culture of fearing officials of RVL, so what’s the point? “
“We have a way to go, we have a lot of tapes and betting sheets to examine but as far as those rails bookmakers are concerned, we were satisfied that he (Allanson) had not bet with them,” said in a separate statement the chairman of Racing Victoria stewards Des Gleeson.
