We may be past the first weekend of the MLB betting season, but there’s still a touch of spring training madness in the air as we begin the first full week of the schedule.
Will our free MLB parlay picks reflect the game and teams trying to settle in for the long grind?

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees
Monday, April 03, 2023 – 07:05 PM EDT at Yankee Stadium
A preseason pick on the MLB futures to contend for the NL East title and make the playoffs, the defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies were swept in Texas to start the year, and now have to try and stop the skid with a tough interleague series at the New York Yankees.
- Taijuan Walker (2022 stats): 12-5, 3.49
- Nestor Cortes (2022 stats): 12-4, 2.44
Cortes Makes 1st Start Vs. Phillies
A rematch of the 2009 World Series won by the Yankees, New York is running around -170 at top sportsbooks for this series opener in the Bronx. Nestor Cortes gets the ball for Aaron Boone’s pinstripers, and Phillies skipper Rob Thomson hands the ball to Taijuan Walker.
Walker is making his Phillies debut but has plenty of experience against the Yankees via his days with the Mariners and Mets. He no-decisioned in New York two summers ago (5 IP, 2 ER), and Aaron Judge is 4-11 against Walker in his career, all 4 hits leaving the yard.
Cortes is coming off mixed results during spring training and making his first career start against the Phillies. The Floridian faced them at Citizens Bank Park two summers ago in long relief, allowing a run in nearly 4 innings of work.
Teams Split 4 in ‘21
Philadelphia scored 5 runs in the first 5 innings on Opening Day, then tallied just 6 more the rest of the series in Texas where the Rangers broke out their brooms on Sunday. Their 2021 interleague series saw home teams win each time in the 4-game, home-&-home slate.
I won’t play a lot of -170 chalk over the course of a season but feel very good about tagging the Yankees on the first leg of our 3-team parlay.
Parlay Pick: Yankees ML (-170)
Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros
Monday, April 03, 2023 – 08:10 PM EDT at Minute Maid Park
From one chalky play to a sizeable underdog we go for the next piece of the parlay puzzle, that little bit of foreboding all about the series opener down in Houston where the defending World Series Champion Astros host the Detroit Tigers.
- Matthew Boyd: 2-0, 1.35
- Hunter Brown: 2-0, 0.89
Boyd Back with Motown 9
Dusty Baker and Houston send young Hunter Brown to the bump as -230 chalk at BAS (visit our BetAnySports Review), while former Astros manager A.J. Hinch counters with veteran Matthew Boyd for the Tigers.
Brown made his debut last September, and his second career start was a winner at Minute Maid against Detroit. But he is coming off a rough spring that included dealing with a back injury.
Boyd showed off some increased command during Spring Training with 21 strikeouts against just 3 walks over the course of 13 exhibition innings. He’s back with the Tigers where Boyd has spent most of his career and beat the Astros in Houston two years ago as the underdog.
Hinch Gets 1st Win Against Former Team
Houston won all eight matchups with the Tigers last season and is coming off a 4-game split with the White Sox to begin this year while Detroit remains winless. The Tigers get off the schneid Monday night for our second MLB pick.
Parlay Pick: Tigers ML (+199)
Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners
Monday, April 03, 2023 – 09:40 PM EDT at T-Mobile Park
- Reid Detmers: 7-6, 3.77
- George Kirby: 8-5, 3.39
Lowest Total on Monday Board
Seattle will send one of the top young hurlers in the game to the mound looking to stop an early 3-game slide, and the Mariners are priced around -140 on the MLB odds against the Angels and their promising young arm Reid Detmers. The 7-run total is the shortest scoreboard target on Monday.
Something of a spring workhorse, Detmer climbed the hill six times and logged 20 Cactus League innings for the Angels. The southpaw beat the Mariners in both of his starts against them in 2022 (13 IP, 2 ER).
Kirby also impressed during his exhibition tune-ups, and pitched well against the Angels last season while splitting four assignments (3.04 ERA, 23.2 IP). Both defeats came when the New York native was matched up on the mound against Shohei Ohtani.
Halos Get the Nod
Speaking of Sho-Time, Ohtani and Mike Trout went back-to-back on consecutive pitches in the Angels’ 6-0 blanking of the Athletics in Oakland on Sunday. I’ll be adding another underdog – though not nearly as big as Detroit – to my 3-team parlay on Monday. April Madness!
