It should come as no surprise, but the casino revenue in Kansas dipped in June.

The latest report from the state regulator reveals that the four non-tribal venues generated nearly $33 million in total revenue for June. That’s almost a 9% decrease from May’s total. All four Kansas casinos showed a monthly revenue drop—two by double digits.

June Second-Worst Revenue Generating Month

Over the first half of the year, Kansas casinos faced a challenging month in June, marking it as the second-lowest revenue month since January. Despite a slight recovery from the start of the year, when the total wins just crossed the $30 million mark, June’s performance remained lackluster.

Here’s a detailed look at Kansas casino revenues month by month:

  • January 2024: $30,311,619
  • February 2024: $34,298,725
  • March 2024: $38,669,189
  • April 2024: $34,929,378
  • May 2024: $36,125,880
  • June 2024: $32,908,743

While March was a high point with nearly $39 million, June’s revenue dipped again, suggesting a fluctuating but challenging year for Kansas casinos.

Sports Betting Putting Up Big Year in Kansas

Ironically, when you compare last year’s numbers, 2024 casino revenue is up 2%. But the biggest winner in Kansas is sports betting.

Kansas sportsbooks surpassed the $4 billion milestone as the state concluded its first 20 months of sports betting. Kansas top-rated sportsbook operators raked in more than $140 million in bets. When you add the casino revenue, the total jumps to nearly $174 million. That’s a nearly 43% increase compared to the inaugural June of sports betting in 2023 when the tally stood at just over $98 million.

The state’s coffers, too, flourished, reaping a tidy $17.6 million through taxes.

Online Sports Betting Dominates in Kansas

And Kansas bettors are all about convenience. Nearly 97% of their wagers were placed online, following the national trend.

DraftKings led the way at $66.4 million—commanding a hefty 47% share of the June 2024 handle. Not far behind was FanDuel with $40.4 million, claiming almost 29% of the month’s wagers.

The remaining quartet of sportsbooks in the Sunflower State collectively chipped in nearly $34 million, making up 24% of the June 2024 market.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • ESPN Bet: A respectable $11.19 million (8%)
  • BetMGM: Matching the stakes at $11.15 million (8%)
  • Caesars: Rolling the dice with $6.2 million (4.6%)
  • Fanatics: Playing it cool with $4.4 million (3.2%)

The only caveat, however, is that June’s 2024 sports betting revenue saw a dip of almost 19% from the previous month, which isn’t surprising. Summer tends to cool off the betting frenzy because there are fewer major sports to wager on. But fear not—football season is just around the corner and the numbers are poised for a comeback.

And we’re still waiting to see if Kansas lawmakers have another move up their sleeve to lure the Kansas City Chiefs and/or the Kansas City Royals across the state line from Missouri. There’s already an offer on the table to build a new stadium for each team. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly put pen to paper, authorizing a bill that opens the door to stadium construction through state-issued bonds. We’ll keep you posted.
