The 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) got underway in Chicago, Illinois on Monday evening. It will run through Thursday, August 22 with the goal of firmly establishing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee in the 2024 US presidential election. Her running mate for vice president is Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
In July, the Republicans had their Republican National Convention when Donald Trump officially made Ohio Senator JD Vance his running mate, so we know the November election will be Trump/Vance vs. Harris/Walz.
At least we expect so as this has been a wild election already with incumbent Joe Biden dropping out of the race in late July, a historic move this late in the game, which has shaken up political betting sites.
U.S. Presidential Election Odds
It’s finally happened: Kamala Harris has overtaken Donald Trump as the slight favorite in the 2024 U.S. election odds board.

Monday night at the DNC was President Biden’s big moment as he delivered the keynote speech to close the night. Let’s recap Monday’s events and the planned speakers for the next 3 nights at the 2024 DNC.
Monday’s Speakers: Joe Biden’s Night
Things kicked off Monday with actor Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) serving as the emcee. What followed was an incredibly long lineup of speakers.
We will not list every speaker, but here are some of the highlights:
- Former First Lady and 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was well received with her speech, highlighting the chance America has to elect the 1st female president in Kamala Harris.
- New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was sharp in her attack lines on the Republican party, referencing her past experience as a bartender as a positive.
- Golden State Warriors coach and former Chicago Bulls player Steve Kerr concluded his speech with a nod to Steph Curry’s “sleep” gesture in ending Donald Trump’s political career should the Democrats win in November.
- Mallory McMorrow, the Michigan Senate Majority Whip, brought a large copy of Project 2025 to the stage and attempted to tie Trump to that.
Kamala Harris made a brief, surprise appearance around halfway through the night to celebrate Biden. After speeches by his wife Jill and daughter Ashley, Joe Biden took the stage around 11:30 PM and delivered an energetic speech that was part of what he would have said Thursday night if he was still the nominee, and he also paved the way forward for Harris and Walz.
Tuesday’s Speakers: The Obamas Headline
The tentative schedule for Tuesday night is much smaller but does have some big names:
- CNN’s Ana Navarro, a Republican and political strategist who supports Harris, will serve as host.
- J. B. Pritzker, the Governor of Illinois, the host of the DNC.
- Doug Emhoff, the Second Gentleman and husband to Harris
- Michelle Obama, the former First Lady
- Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States (2009-2017), will deliver the keynote speech.
Wednesday’s Speakers: Tim Walz’s Time
On Wednesday night, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will take center stage for his acceptance speech as the Democratic nominee for vice president. Here are the other speakers scheduled to appear:
- Actress Mindy Kaling (The Office) will be the emcee/host.
- Pete Buttigieg, the US Secretary of Transportation
- Nancy Pelosi, the 1st woman to be Speaker of the House
- Maxwell Frost, Florida congressman
- Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States (1993-2001)
Thursday’s Speakers: Kamala Harris to Close Things
The 2024 DNC will close Thursday night with Vice President Kamala Harris giving her acceptance speech as the Democratic nominee for president.
Other speakers expected to appear:
- Actress Kerry Washington (Scandal) will host.
- Adam Kinzinger, former Republican congressman
- Shomari Figures, House of Representative nominee in Alabama
- Maura Healey, Governor of Massachusetts
Some rumors are swirling about a performance by Beyoncé before Harris delivers the biggest speech of the week, but we’ll have to wait and see.
