Yea - baseball draft is different - coming out of HS - your drafting in raw athletic ability and potential - vs being expected to make the jump to bigs in 2-3 years which might be the case for some 4th year college players.

Big development difference between a 18 year old and a 22/23 year old.

That said - some skills translate immediately and it’s entire possible to make the bigs in a year or 2 from HS - not common but possible. Speed obviously one - you might gain a little extra in college - but for baseball purposes don’t think your gonna become a base running threat if you weren’t to start with. Ditto batting (but again level of competition- how many HS pitchers are throwing low 90s and have both a developed pitch arsenal and control and ability to change speeds by 6-8 MPH - not many - as you hit High A ball it’s the first time guys see more than 2 “great” pitchers a season.

Thinking back - been a lot of highly drafted guys from HS taken by both Indians/Guardians and Pirates who simply never made it to bigs. 2 organizations who took cheaper HS talent vs pricier college prospects hoping to get lucky and crapped out. But also plenty of HS guys who made the jump - Griffey Jr probably brightest example of it “going right” - but Chipper Jones was a HS prospect too from memory.

It’s all about getting the chance to develop in the right program. Obviously Dodgers have a stacked team and wouldn’t be rushing anyone through - but a couple of years learning and kid could have a very bright future ahead of him at age 21.

But this is a celebration. I'd imagine that this kid is going to pick up a very nice Signing bonus. If he's smart about it, he should be in good financial shape and can just focus on his career.

Dodgers impressed with 1st-rounder Kellon Lindsey’s speed, athleticism​

The Dodgers selected Florida high school shortstop Kellon Lindsey with their first-round pick of the MLB Draft on Sunday night.

The 6’2 Lindsey hit .403/.567/597 in 25 games as a senior at Hardee High School in Wauchula, Florida, and also was the school’s quarterback on the football team.

“He’s a dynamic athlete, and shortstops are so hard to find,” Dodgers vice president of baseball operations Billy Gasparino said in a statement. “We also love his work ethic, and we think he’s going to be a very prototype Dodger player that we all like and are rooting for in the future.”

On the ESPN telecast of the draft, as soon as Lindsey was picked, he was comped to Trea Turner, and Lindsey a few weeks ago in an interview on MLB Network was even asked about how the two were alike, even down to the smooth sliding.

At the MLB Draft combine in June in Phoenix, Lindsey ran the fastest time in the 30-yard dash at 3.53 seconds.

“It’s a big run, defensive shortstop, we think there’s power coming, and the excitement level or player development staff has is through the roof,” Gasparino said Sunday night, per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider.

Concentrating solely on one sport figures to help in Lindsey’s baseball development.

The recommended slot value for the 23rd-overall pick is $3,767,400. Lindsey in his interview on Sunday night with reporters was asked if he planned to sign with the Dodgers rather than attend the University of Florida said, “Yes. As of now, that’s the plan,” per Plunkett.
