Asked on Twitter, but want to hear from the forum on this one...

Calvin Ridley has been reinstated by the NFL, and will be eligible to play for his new team (JAX) in 2023

He missed all of 2022 for wagering on games in November of 2021

Did the punishment fit the crime? Should he be allowed back? Sound off! (feel free to reply on Twitter as well)

Tough call on if the punishment fit the crime but, he did violate NFL players contract. And he did place bets on the games he was in so.....

Also, It's a LITTLE different than what Pete Rose did. Pete bet on MLB but not on his own games. Keeping Pete out of the HOF is not right. Suspending Ridley for a year... Seems about right for his infraction.

edit: typos.

Could not agree with this take more. The Pete Rose thing is absolutely insane. And the crazy thing is - I bet once he passes away, he'll get in. The tide is eventually going to turn there when the current BBWAA voting body ages out (even with all the other questionable off-the-field stuff surrounding him)....just my 2 cents!

Attitudes and perceptions change with time.
Pete will be in HOF.

I'm going to guarantee you, more players than just Ridley are betting on their own games.

I agree Sam I think now that the NFL is more embedded in the sports betting culture that it shouldn't be a problem. Obviously you shouldn't be betting when you are an active player but I think the punishment fit and Jacksonville will be happy to have him back

Do you think the 1-year precedent is a good place to start for first time infractions?

I feel like that's good for a first timer, and then if it happens again it should be an indefinite suspension (a la Rose in baseball)

if we are trying to keep things consistent or if we are trying to say penalty A should be longer than penalty B

then I'll say.....

if sexual assault is 6 games
deflating a football is 4 games
then betting on a game is 4 games

how can betting on a game where the NFL sponsors gambling and promotes it every second they can, how can it be worse than assaulting another person

I mean I've seen DUIs get shorter suspensions than this

I'd say a one year ban is a good place to start. And that at least sends a message to other players as well

I agree Sammy its hypocritical for NFL to punish players for betting in general since DK and FD are deep in their pockets but, if players are allowed to bet on their own games, damn..... That is going to make it tough for anyone believe these games aren't more "rigged' than they currently are.

Ridley lays 5 dimes on himself w/ a player prop of under 6 receptions.
I'm going to bet he's dropping a few to hit that bet.

I put this in the much about nuthin category…

kid was guilty of being stupid… yes! Come on Dude … ever hear of a “Beard”?
But he lost Millions because of a 4 figure bet …

Doesn't add up in my opinion….

like a kid getting busted for smoking weed …

very sharp line to draw about members getting down, regulating that, then getting some serious scratch from SportsBook on the ass end…

Difficult to navigate…

As weird as it may sound, I just feel like something that could have an immediate and direct impact on the competitive balance of a game (i.e. betting on your own team) needs to be a firm, substantial punishment, with little-to-no grey area. Get caught once, out for a year. It feels like it's in a different class than the other stuff you mentioned.

Exactly - that's why it needs to be a firm punishment for a first-time offense. If they're not 100% consistent across the board on that, the "script" conspiracy theories will only get louder! lol

I don't, however, agree that it's hypocritical to take advertising dollars from gambling companies while, at the same time, banning your players from betting on their own league. If it's a product that fans will want to use, then it's only natural that the league would seek those types of sponsors. The TV and in-stadium products are presentations for the fans, not the players! More money being spent on this stuff is better for everyone that loves sports, IMO
