I agree. The extra time assigned by the ref is so random.
VAR accounts for a lot of that time , but soccer is a continuous game. In Football you have plenty of time between plays and sit for long periods. Baseball has very little endurance to it and hockey shifts are 30 sec to a minute these days. In soccer a guy feigns an injury or contact in order to catch his breath. Even Bball gives you plenty of free throws and time outs. That's why spectators in Nth America point to the diving and fake injuries as a reason to dislike the game. What if the NBA , NHL , NFL and MLB insisted on continuous play without substitutions or breaks for at least 45+ minutes?
No way those sports could stack up to that level of endurance.
My 2 cents
I didn't think it was a vicious play. He was attempting to score and never raised his leg high enough to make contact with the defenders head. To go to VAR to determine that it was something the ref didn't notice from a few feet away, was instigated by a Venezuelan player in the refs ear. Up to that point it was all Ecuador ,and losing their best player and captain , ruined any chance they have of advancing.
I was also disgusted that VAR disallowed the Dutch goal against France. At no point did the player interfere with the goalie or the ball on its way into the net. Horrible call

Valencia of Ecuador was going for a loose ball right in front of the Venezuelan goal and raised his leg to kick the ball. It was deemed to be a foul by the ref. He gave him a yellow card for a dangerous kick. It was another Venezuelan player who was in the ref's ear and asked for a red card to be given. That's when VAR was used and determined to change the yellow to a red card. That left Ecuador to play nearly 80 minutes a man short.

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm still learning with soccer
The reason I asked about penalty shots is because since I've been betting soccer Live occasionally, I've seen Refs award them at the very end of games and basically GIVE that team the win
That has to be the worst thing in all of sports officiating
Equivalent of an official in NFL calling pass interference on a 60yd Hail Mary with no time left and giving the offense the win
If it's blatantly obvious I can see it but that's rare
Coach , Brazil are an elite team. Costa Rica are re building after a long run of good results. The line already reflects the disparity in talent.
Sorry Genie , I will be cheering for Costa Rica tho
