the only real significance Maine has is that it has split electoral votes by district. Maine splits 4 votes (2, 1, 1 by district) and Nebraska splits 5 votes (4 and 1 by district).

There are two paths that matter most:

Rust Belt path through WI (10 votes) MI (15 votes) PA (19 votes) and the Sun Belt path NV (6 votes) AZ (11 votes) GA (16 votes). Supposedly NC might in play for the blue team this year due to a Net +400,000 registered democrats who migrated in mostly from the Northeast states. NC is worth 16 votes so that is huge.

Truly, this election will likely be so close that ~100,000 votes across 7 states will likely decide this election.

the other 43 are so red or blue that they are pretty much set in stone and it is only the other 7 that will decide this race.

There are 345 million people in America right now of which approximately 244 million people are registered to vote in 2024 but this number will climb quite a bit over the next 70 days.

Still, 244 million eligible voters and a population of 345 millions but a tiny percentage of just 0.00028985507% or 100,000 people will decide it.
