That's not what happened though

If he was just thanking his wife, he wouldn't have tried to tell the graduating women explicitly that they should look forward to being a homemaker or suggest that they should do the same

He would've said something:

"Thank you wife for being at home while I pursue my dreams" and said nothing else

That's why the wife needs to work to be financially independent and can easily decide if she wants to be out of an abusive husband.
