As a young lad, I detassled corn in the boy scouts. I learned how to survive in the wilderness and how to protect myself from wild bears, while you were being fed oatmeal out of a silver spoon in Beverly Hills.
Did you ever walk bean fields pulling weeds?
How about throwing hay bales onto a flatbed and hauling them to the barn and throwing them on a conveyor to the upper loft?

I've checked all those boxes:

Walked Beans :checkmark
Detassled corn :checkmark
Baled hay (small square bales that you stack on a wagon). :checkmark
Raised a baby calf with a feeding bottle 3x a day. :checkmark
Broke the ice on the frozen pond so the cattle had water. :checkmark
Shoveled the cow s#it out of the barn :checkmark

What's the reason why the gov't will pay farmers not to grow corn?
Indirectly it was government support of the farmers. It was a way for the government to help keep crop prices elevated. Higher prices kept farmers from going broke.

It was called the "set-aside" program. If you joined it, you had to fallow your land for 10 years and you were paid by the government to do so. You wouldn't make as much money was you could if you were farming the land but you had zero costs since the land wasn't used.

If you quit before the 10 yrs was up, the government would want some money back.
The county would have audits to make sure you weren't using part of the land. If you were, you were fined.

I see.. as long as it's for good intentions, then no complaints with that.
