Interesting - a friend of mine when I was young idolized Morrison. He was an interesting person for sure - but a bit out there for my taste. Always thought Ray Manzarek and Krieger kind of got overlooked by the powerhouse personality that was Morrison on stage. In real life - by all accounts the guy was a freaking nut. Even after making it big he basically eschewed all possessions - just living a freestyle bohemian lifestyle.

Myself - it was more a bit of column a- a bit of column b kinda thing. I’d watch a guy like Magic Johnson and think there would never be anyone as good on the court - not really a popular viewpoint for a white kid in the Midwest to hold at the time - it was Magic v Bird and Bird was beloved. As I got older - I appreciated guys like Pete Maravich and how great he was.

Musically - Lennon was the peak for a while. Again - until I started digging deeper than the stuff they played on the radio.

Of course there were more “down to earth” idols too - one that immediately comes to mind was the old man who lived out the road from us. Just he and his wife - never had any kids. They lived in a mobile home and had came to the area from Western Kentucky looking for a job in the coal mines. Dude owned 2 of the most bad ass things I had ever seen in my life - a El Camino SS and a Telecaster Custom - both in a metallic candy apple red. He used to come out on Saturday nights to hang out with my grandfather and whoever else showed up to play in the garage. I would have been around 7-8 at the time and to my hears - they were great. Grand dad was a tall man and had a deep tenor nearing baritone like voice ala John Cash. Our neighbor played the hottest lead guitar I had ever heard anywhere and between the 2 of them it was as good as anything I ever heard.

40+ years later - I still say if I ever find the money - those are 2 things I’ll own in my life - an el Camino like that and a Tele custom. Might as well toss in a sunburst 335 like my grandads that I learned to play on. Damn guitar felt HUGE in my hands at 8 - one of the few things I really wished my parents would have never sold. Didn’t need the cash - but hey someone offers you 1200 for a guitar in the late 80s - you don’t say no I guess. Sadly now worth probably 30x that amount.

Probably one of the 2 baseball players I enjoyed watching most - along with Gooden.

For a 5 year period there - he was as good of a combination of speed/power and average as there was it seemed. Doc on the other hand was simply the best pitcher of his generation for those 5 years.

Of course didn’t take long before drugs and the move to the Dodgers for Strawberry to take its toll. Those Mets teams of the late 80s were as talented as they were dysfunctional.

I'm guessing Catilyn Clark all-time most in USA HISTORY kids 5-16

Today - possibly. Tomorrow someone will make a name for themselves on TikTok and surpass her.

All time though - I’d have to say Babe Ruth. Think about it - a century ago there was no TV and radio broadcast of games were not a regular thing - you actually PLAYED the game all day - not sat around and watched it - and then followed the players via box scores. Ruth was the biggest player at a time where none of the other sports were near as popular. Sure college football and boxing were big draws - but baseball had every kids attention and every male kid played baseball.

As far as CC being an idol today - all I can say is they could certainly pick worse ones. Hell - look at some of the “rock stars” we idolized in the late 80s - is a pure shooting WNBA player all that bad compared to having kids wanting to be the next lead singer of some hair band?
